Malham Cove is a huge curving amphitheatre shaped cliff formation of limestone rock.

The vertical face of the cliff is about 260 feet high. The top of the cove is a large area of deeply eroded limestone pavement, of a strange pattern rarely seen in England. The majesty of Malham Cove looks out over the Village of Malham and has been attracting visitors for centuries.

The three stepped waterfalls at Aysgarth have been a tourist attraction for over 200 years. Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy visited while they waited for their coach horses to be changed and Turner sketched them on a tour of the north. More recently they provided a dramatic setting for a scene from the Hollywood movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

The National Park Authority own Freeholders' Wood Local Nature Reserve alongside the falls and there are several easy paths winding through it. In spring the wood is full of wood anemones and primroses. You may even be lucky enough to see roe deer darting away into the shadows.

In recent years dormice have been reintroduced and we are pleased to say that they are thriving. They only come out at night so you are unlikely to see them but maybe you will hear them snoring if you are very, very quiet!

There is a National Park Centre, café and car park at Aysgarth Falls so it's easy to visit. A top tip is to remember that the waterfalls are at their most dramatic after heavy rain.

Ribblehead viaduct is just over the border from Cumbria into North Yorkshire and is undoubtedly the most impressive structure on the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

Hundreds of railway builders (“navvies”) lost their lives building the line, from a combination of accidents, fights, and smallpox outbreaks. In particular, building the Ribblehead (then Batty Moss) viaduct, with its 24 massive stone arches 104 feet (32 metres) above the moor, caused such loss of life that the railway paid for an expansion of the local graveyard.

Memorials along the line, especially those at St Mary’s Church Outhgill and St Leonards’ Church, Chapel-le-dale commemorate the lives of some of the men who died building the line.

Bolton Castle is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the country and dominates Wensleydale with its commanding presence. The castle was built by Sir Richard le Scrope who was Lord Chancellor of England during the reign of Richard II, and is still owned by a direct descendent Lord Bolton. Construction of the castle began in 1378 and took around 18 years to build. It was designed as a fortified residence rather than being simply a military base. The castle’s most famous resident was Mary Queen of Scots who was held in custody there in 1568.

Bolton Castle now provides a great day out where you can gain a real insight into life in the Medieval period. In addition to looking around the Castle, there are falconry displays, a chance to try archery and it even provides a spectacular wedding venue.

Spend a whole day out exploring this extensive World Heritage Site in North Yorkshire.

It's much more than just an abbey. Just around the river bend you’ll find one of England’s most spectacular Georgian water gardens, Studley Royal. Designed by John Aislabie, this water garden gives the site its World Heritage status. Wander over green lawns, past white statues and find all the follies. Spot the birds splashing on the ponds and find the dark Serpentine tunnel, leading to the High Ride path with views down to the water garden.

Fountains Mill is the oldest standing building in the National Trust. Sitting by the abbey and Fountains Hall, you can see the large water wheel working away. Learn all about how the monks of Fountains Abbey fed themselves and keep your eyes out for art exhibitions held throughout the year.

St Mary's church sits in the 400 acre medieval deer park. Although only open over the summer, this elaborate Burges' church is well worth a visit before exploring the pathways through the deer park. See if you can spot some of the 300 deer that make the park their home.

Bring kids to the large play area, complete with a miniature abbey and How Hill Tower to climb over. Fly high on the swings (including an accessible 5 point harness swing), an accessible round about and a zip-wire to zoom down. Little legs can be occupied for hours.
